HINRICH HORSTKOTTE (GERMANY)

 

Berlin born stage director and set designer Hinrich Horstkotte (1972) started out as a marionette player before studying set and costume design at the Academy Of Fine Arts in Munich (1992-98) with Karl-Ernst and Ursel Herrmann. He joined them as their preferred assistant director for productions  in Amsterdam, Geneva, Baden-Baden, Innsbruck and at the Salzburg Festival.

He was awarded with the Debut Award  (Debütantenpreis) of the Bavarian state government along with his degree in 1998.

Even while studying, he started to work as a freelance set designer and director. Since 1994 he has designed sets and costumes for the Biennale Munich, the Ludwigsburger Schloßfestspiele and, among others, the opera houses in Chemnitz and Nuremberg.

He  has directed  - mostly with his own stage and costume designs - for theatres and opera houses in Germany (Augsburg, Berlin, Bremerhaven, Chemnitz, Dessau, Detmold, Dortmund, Freiberg, Halberstadt, Hof, Hamburg, Krefeld-Mönchengladbach, Oldenburg, Radebeul, Saarbrücken, Ulm) Austria (Salzburg, Vienna/Volksoper), Luxembourg, Denmark (Jyske Opera) and Taiwan (Taipeh), as well as for the festivals of Rheinsberg, Potsdam, Bayreuth Baroque and Innsbruck.

Horstkotte directed more than 70 productions in opera, drama and puppet theatre, including plays by Shakespeare, Marivaux, Tardieu, Ionesco and operas by Caccini, Cavalli, Draghi, Purcell, Charpentier, Torrejón y Velasco, Handel,  Graun, Pergolesi, Galuppi, Mozart, Rameau, Weber, Rossini, Donizetti, Marschner, Thomas, Lortzing, Wagner, Verdi, Flotow, Offenbach, Gounod, Smetana, Tchaikovsky, Humperdinck, Dvořák, Puccini, Prokofjev, Shostakovich, Goldschmidt and Britten, as well as operettas by Abraham, Fall, J. Strauß, Suppé and O. Straus.

He was  nominated repeatedly by the German magazine Opernwelt as Director of the Year as well as Designer of the Year as  well as for the first Austrian Music Theater  Prize (Musiktheaterpreis) in 2013.

He has taught stagecraft for opera singers at the University of the Arts and at the Technical University in Berlin and at the International Opera Studio of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin.
